Scheduling anti-virus scans

You may want to setup schedules to do specific scans or full system scans. Due to the impact that this can have on performance to your VPS, we recommend that these be scheduled to run during off-peak hours, such as during the day on weekends (running at night could have negative impact on performance to your VPS's nightly backups).

  1. Open the AVG user interface per the above instructions
  2. From the AVG user interface, click the Tools menu, and select Advanced Settings.
  3. On the left-hand side of the Advanced Settings window, right click on Schedules and chose New Schedule.
  4. Give the new schedule a name such as "Weekly AV scan" and click OK.
  5. Select the new schedule and set the following options:
    1. check Enable this task
    2. Select the option Run at specific time interval and chose an interval for your scan to run.
    3. Click the What to scan tab and chose whether you want to scan the whole computer or just specific directories.

Deleting a scheduled scan

If you have a scheduled scan that you no longer need, expand the schedules per instructions above

  1. Open the AVG user interface per the above instructions.
  2. From the AVG user interface, click the Tools menu, and select Advanced Settings.
  3. On the left-hand side of the Advanced Settings window, expand Schedules
  4. Right click on the schedule you wish to remove and select Delete.

Exclusions and automatic removal of threats

Excluding files and folders from real-time scan

Under certain conditions it may be beneficial to exclude certain files and folders from the real time scan. For example, if you are running Smartermail on your VPS and the mail spool is already being scanned, you may wish to set exclusions for the user mailboxes so as to avoid duplicate scanning of files.

  • Important note Exclusions should be configured sparingly and only after careful consideration of the consequences. You should not exclude temp directories or any other directory that your application can read from or write to.

To set file or folder exclusions:

  1. Open the AVG user interface per the above instructions
  2. From the AVG user interface, click the Tools menu, and select Advanced Settings.
  3. On the left-hand side of the Advanced Settings window, expand Anti-virus and select Resident Shield.
  4. Expand Resident Shield and select Exceptions.
  5. Use the Add File button to set exclusions for specific files and use the Add Path button to set exclussions for entire directories.

Changing whether AVG automatically removes threats or not

By default, AVG is configured to automatically remove threats. We strongly recommend that you do not modify this setting. A file that is quarantined by AVG can always be recovered or replaced. However, if a virus or other malware that is allowed to execute, the damage may not be able to be undone. This is especially true if the malware steals confidential data from your VPS.

That being said, if you must configure AVG to not automatically remove detected threats:

  1. Open the AVG user interface per the above instructions
  2. From the AVG user interface, click the Tools menu, and select Advanced Settings.
  3. On the left-hand side of the Advanced Settings window, expand Anti-virus and select Resident Shield.
  4. Uncheck the option Ask me before removing threats.
  5. Click the Apply button then the Ok button.
