Summary

Let's Encrypt is a free, automated, and open SSL certificate authority. It can be used to provide optional free SSL encryption. It is only basic-level encryption, however, so there is still value to purchasing premium SSL certificate from providers like GeoTrust or Verisign.

Let's Encrypt on a cPanel VPS

Installing Let's Encrypt is simple and easy. cPanel v58 and above supports the following command via SSH:

/scripts/install_lets_encrypt_autossl_provider

Then do the following:

  1. Log into WHM (http://yourVPShostname:2086).
  2. Search on the left for 'Manage AutoSSL'.
  3. Under 'Choose an AutoSSL Provider:' select 'Let's Encrypt™'
  4. Check the 'I agree to these terms of service' box.
  5. Click Save.
  6. That's it! Let's Encrypt is now installed.

Enabling Let's Encrypt for a cPanel user/domain

  1. Log into WHM (http://yourVPShostname:2086).
  2. Search on the left for 'Manage AutoSSL'.
  3. Click 'Manage Users'
  4. Search for the username in the search box.
  5. Click 'Enable AutoSSL' for that user.
  6. That's it! it will automatically enable.
