What is SMTP Authentication

To help prevent spammers from using a mail server to send spam, SMTP Authentication is a helpful tool that requires the person sending to authenticate (ie, login) with their account username and password.

For our Shared SmarterMail Mail Servers:

To help fight/prevent spam, starting with SmarterMail 11.x, the SmarterMail servers have a new feature that requires the FROM address to be the domain address. For example, if you are authenticating with yourname@your_domain.com you can only send email out with a FROM address containing @your_domain.com. In other words, you wouldn't be able to send using someone@some_other_domain.com.

Why is this important? Spammers have all kinds of means to send spam. We must do everything possible to prevent spam from going out. When spam does go out and the server becomes blacklisted, then your email will likely have a hard time being delivered. We realize this change may impact a small number of customers. We hope you understand the importance of protecting the mail server, so that your legitimate emails are delivered successfully.
