Summary
Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is a secure version of File Transfer Protocol (FTP), which sends data access and data transfer over a Secure Shell (SSH) connection. This term is also known as SSH File Transfer Protocol. Some WordPress plugins and other software request the use of SFTP.
<br /><br />
Benefits of SFTP
Whenever a user opens up a regular ftp session, the entire transmission made between the host and the user is sent in plain text, which violates a number of key security fundamentals. When using SFTP, however, the entire login session -- including any files transferred during the session -- is completely encrypted.
<br /><br />
SFTP on cPanel Shared Server Environment
Allowing SFTP by default on a shared webserver is a moderate security risk, since SFTP uses an SSH connection to function. In order to use an SSH connection, shell access must be given to a user account. Enabling SSH access globally on the server so SFTP works by default removes a layer of security for all clients on the server, since anyone may access SSH in a jailed session at any time.

However, there is an alternative to SFTP that we employ on Hostek.com shared servers which is much more secure in the terms of the above. This method is called TLS, and is enabled by default on all of our shared environments:

Please click here for a guide to connect to Hostek.com cPanel/Linux servers via FTP over TLS.

If you have an application that requires SFTP to function, however, please submit a ticket via https://support.hostek.com and mention this guide. We'd be glad to enable SSH for just your account. Once we confirm SSH is enabled, you may | click here to follow Hostek.com's guide and set up SFTP.
<br /><br />
SFTP on a VPS Environment
Enabling SFTP on a private server is perfectly acceptable, as the risks described for a shared server do not apply. | For a guide to enable SFTP on your VPS, please click here.

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Web edition is used for serving our customers shared accounts. We also offer MyLittleAdmin and MyLittleBackup to our shared customers through the WCP.

VPS Hosting Considerations
For access to MyLittleAdmin and MyLittleBackup for VPS customers additional licensing is required, please contact support.

Backwards Compatibility
Older versions of databases can be imported onto newer MSSQL servers, but newer versions cannot be used on older MSSQL servers.

*A MSSQL 2008 database can be imported into MSSQL 2012, however, a MSSQL 2012 database cannot be used on a MSSQL 2008 server.

SQL Express and SQL Web Limitations
MS SQL Express 2014
*Max Database size 10 GB in size
*Max RAM utilization 1 GB Ram

MS SQL Web 2014
*Max Database size 524 PB in size
*Max RAM utilization 64 GB Ram

MS SQL Express 2012
*Max Database size 10 GB in size
*Max RAM utilization 1 GB Ram

To manage SQL 2012 Download SQL Management Studio 2012

MS SQL Express 2008
*Max Database size 4 GB in size
*Max RAM utilization 1 GB Ram

NOTES:
*For supporting a busy database or several databases with normal usage we recommend the Web edition with available RAM over 1GB.
*Scheduled Tasks: If you need to use Scheduled Tasks with the SQL Agent, you will need the Web Edition or higher.

Web Edition Limitations
*Full-text indexing is not installed by default, request should be made to support for installing with full-text indexing.
*Cannot be a Publisher for SQL Replication, for supporting SQL Replication and publishing we recommend the Standard Edition

Custom Name Servers for VPS
Cpanel VPS
The best practice is to add custom Name Servers before adding domains to your cpanel VPS.

#Set DNS A records for each of the name servers being created, NS1.yourdomain.com and NS2.yourdomain.com to use the VPS IP address.
#Login to the cpanel WebHost Manager usually http://your-server-ip:2086
#Click "Basic cPanel & WHM Setup" and scroll to the bottom to view/set the "Nameservers".
#If you have already added domains to your cpanel server, edit each DNS zone setting any and all references for name servers to your new Name Server records, (ns3.hostek.com & ns4.hostek.com changed to ns1.yourdomain.com & ns2.yourdomain.com).
#SSH into your cpanel VPS and run this script to update cpanel so it will recognize your new Name Servers.
#*<pre>/usr/local/cpanel/scripts/updatenameserverips</pre>
#Register your Name Servers with the Cpanel server IP Address, at your registrar.
#*Videos: Setting custom name servers for the most common registrars.
#*If you registered your domain name with Hostek submit a support request for registering the Name Servers and reference this article and step.
#You can begin pointing domains hosted on your Cpanel VPS to use the custom Name Servers.

*See the latest WebHost Manager Documentation for any changes in steps 2-6.

Windows VPS
All our Windows VPS (ColdFusion included) will be equipped by default with our WCP (windows control panel) which includes integration with two of our own Name Servers. This way you will not have to install the DNS service on your own VPS server, saving bandwidth, installation and management.

#Set DNS A records for each of the name servers being created, NS1.yourdomain.com and NS2.yourdomain.com use the IP Address for the DNS servers (Primary and Secondary) listed in the "Site Details" area of WCP. To find the IP Address for your primary and secondary reference our Name Server information.
#Register your Name Servers with the IP Address for the primary and secondary DNS server in step 1, at your registrar.
#*Videos: Setting custom name servers for the most common registrars.
#*If you registered your domain name with Hostek submit a support request for registering the Name Servers and reference this article and step.
#You can begin pointing domains added through WCP to your custom Name Servers.

Updating Linux Primary and Secondary DNS Servers for Host Name Resolution
The articles above describe how to update the name server used by cPanel to store records for sites added through WHM. If you wish to adjust the nameservers used by Linux for domain/host name resolution, do the following:

*SSH into the server
*Issue this command: <pre>setup</pre>
*Within the setup utility, navigate to Network configuration-->DNS configuration
*Here you can update the Primary and Secondary DNS servers. After updating them, hit OK, the Save&Quit (you have to press the Tab key to move the cursor to the Save&Quit button)
*Quit the setup utility.
*IMPORTANT - At the command line, issue this command to ensure the network adapter reloads all IPs assigned to the server: <pre>/etc/init.d/ipaliases reload</pre>

For Example a php file to be ran:

MS SQL Server Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How to Enable TCP/IP Connections in MS SQL Server
Some versions of SQL Server (including the Express edition) have TCP/IP services disabled by default, which effectively disables remote connections to SQL Server. To enable TCP/IP services for SQL Server on your VPS or Virtual Dedicated server, follow these steps:
#Open the SQL Server Configuration Manager<br /><br /><br />
#Expand the SQL Server Network Configuration-->Protocols for SQLEXPRESS section (it may be named Protocols for MSSQLSERVER in some installations.)<br /><br />
#Right-Click on the TCP/IP item, and click Properties<br /><br /><br />
#Toggle the Enabled property to Yes.<br /><br /><br />
#Switch to the IP Addresses tab, and enable the ports you wish to use to access SQL Server<br /><br /><br />
Restart the SQL Server Service, and you'll be able to connect remotely via IP or hostname.

Note: You will need to ensure your Windows Firewall has the appropriate ports open to allow connections to MS SQL Server.

How to Clear Space in Your Transaction Log
#Roll back any pending transactions and clear all connections first. To do that, run the following three statement query before attempting to backup the log again:<br><code>USE master;<br>ALTER DATABASE mydatabasename SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE;<br>ALTER DATABASE mydatabasename SET MULTI_USER;</code>
#Back up your transaction log by opening SQL Server Management Studio, right-clicking the database and choosing: Tasks-->Back Up....
#In the popup that appears be sure to set the Backup type to "Transaction Log".
#Set the backup destination, and give the file name a .trn extension.
#Once the backup is complete right-click the database, click Tasks-->Shrink-->Files.
#In the popup that appears, set the File Type to Log.
#Click OK.

When you check the size of the database's log file, it should be nearly empty (~ 1 MB).

How to add a Full Text Index
#Log into the SQL Server with Management Studio and find your database
#Expand the Storage Folder, right click "Full text Catalogs" then click "Create New"
#Enter only Full-text Catalog Name and Owner fields. Select any options you require.
#Right-Click the new Full Text catalog then select "Properties"
#Select "Tables/Views" and assign table/views to catalog
#Click Ok, and you're done.

Do you support Bulk Import for CSV files?
On our Shared Servers we do not support this feature, since the database server would be on a different server then your website. You would need to have a VPS hosting server to utilize this feature.
Fatal Error: Out of memory (allocated ########) (tried to allocate ### bytes) in
This is an annoying error that can spring up from time to time due to memory limits being reached.
The Fix
You will need to increase the memory limit for apache and not just the specific site.
How to recalculate Apaches Memory Limit
# Login to your WHM for your server.
# From the Home click on Service Configuration.
# Click on Apache Configuration.
# Click on Memory Usage Restrictions.
# Click Proceed.
# Wait for Apache to recalculate the Memory Limits per application.

How many domains can be added for each SmarterMail VPS plan?
The VPS-1 plan
Includes the free version of SmarterMail which will support a single (1) domain with up to 10 users within the single(1) domain.

The VPS-250 plan
Includes the Enterprise version of SmarterMail and will support a 250 Mailboxes or Domains.

*There is no additional charge for domains added up to 250 Domains.

The VPS-1000 plan
Includes the Enterprise version of SmarterMail and will support a 1000 Mailboxes or Domains.

*There is no additional charge for domains added up to 1000 Domains.

Moving from Shared to VPS hosted SmarterMail
#Pre-setting the DNS records.
#*At your DNS provider edit the "mail" record setting the TTL to 600. If you do not have a "mail" record, create one as a CNAME, and point at the server listed under the domains MX record.
#*Ensure the MX record points to mail.your-domain.com.
#Ensure the domain has already been added to SmarterMail, this should be done through the WCP automatically and only have a single user "mailadmin" setup by default.
#Ensure you have the URL and login details for SmarterMail to login and manage ALL domains. The user will be "admin" if you don't have this login information contact support.
#*Example SmarterMail URL: mail.srv1-yourdomain-com.vps.ezhostingserver.com
#Request a ZIP copy of the SmarterMail domain. Our support should be able to copy this to your server, this process can take 20-30 min depending on the support activity at the time. We highly recommend doing this in the evening.
#Unzip the archive containing the domain, you should find either a folder named your-domain.com or sub folders such as Aliases, Users, Stats and some files. If you find domain.com, with the folders underneath copy the domain.com folder to C:\SmarterMail\Domains and confirm the overwrite. If the ZIP contained the Aliases, Users and Stats folders with files copy all the contents and browse into the domain.com directory and paste, confirming overwrite.
#Login to the SmarterMail admin portal, search the domain and click "Edit" which should open a new window, click the "Reload" button. Select the domain again in the admin portal and click "Manage" then under "Tools" select "Users" and verify all users exists. If they do not try restarting the SmarterMail Service on your VPS and repeat this process.
#*NOTE: The SmarterMail Webserver service should remain STOPPED, it is not needed when using IIS.
#Finalize the DNS by changing "mail" record in DNS to an "A" record and the VPS server IP for the record data, and TTL 14400.
#*Example: mail.yourdomain.com >> Type: A >> Data: 123.123.123.123 >> TTL 14400

How can I migrate my smartermail accounts from another hosting provider?
Things to do on the new SmarterMail VPS before the move:
- On the NEW SmarterMail server
- Copy domainList.xml from the old server
- Copy lastlogin.xml from the old server
- Copy files from old to new server to have an initial base set of files

Steps to start/complete the migration:
- On the NEW Mail server (right after midnight suggested)
- copy all changed files to new server
- On OLD Mail server
- stop spool, pop, imap (services via webmail)
- stop IIS site
- leave SmarterMail running (for SMTP - incoming messages will still be delivered to the spool)
- On NEW mail server
- copy changed files again
- restart New Mail Server
- disable domain on OLD mail server
- Add mail forwarding on OLD SmarterMail server to the NEW SmarterMail server
- Change DNS for any mail records (A and CNAME) and for the MX record
- copy spool from OLD mail server over to NEW mail server
- send test email using an outside email address
- send test from webmail on New Mail Server to an outside address

What if my current host uses an older version of SmarterMail?
No problem. Let us know what version (we can handle version 3.x and after) you currently have and we can start at the same version, and then perform the upgrades to the latest version.

Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus is installed by default on SmarterMail VPS's. This takes precedence over any SmarterMail Anti-Virus specific settings because AVG is installed directly within Windows and not "integrated" within SmarterMail. We do NOT recommend installing or enabling the ClamAV option, because we find the AVG solution much more robust.

To test if the AVG Anti-Virus is working for the SmarterMail VPS, simply send an email from any (non-filtered) smtp server to an email account on the SmarterMail VPS containing the Anti-Malware Testfile. Simply place these ASCII characters into the TXT body of the email, and send. This mail should not arrive, being filtered by AVG. If the file is not filtered you should contact support for assistance in tuning the AVG settings.

<pre>X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*</pre>

SmarterMail VPS - Problems and Solutions
After Migration some Email Blank/Empty
*Stop Smartermail Service
*Delete the mailbox.cfg from the affected folder or folders.
*Start Smartermail Service

Preparation & Setup
After the initial order is placed an email with the SmarterMail login details will be sent to the email address on file, usually in less than 24hrs.

Options for managing the SmarterMail Server
The SmarterMail server will be ready to use. There are a few options on how domains can be setup. Read through these options so you will know how to proceed. RDP service is DISABLED for SmarterMail VPS servers.

#SmarterMail managed using the web portal. This process is easy:
##Browse to the IP address of the server, domains can be added directly through the SmarterMail Admin portal.
##Add individual user accounts either directly through the Admin Portal or by logging into the "management" using the email account setup during the process of adding the domain.
#SmarterMail can be integrated into our Control Panel (WCP), with which domains can be easily added, users managed and DNS management will be provided (clicking Domain Information, will provide the DNS servers). For this option submit a request to our support team.
#SmarterMail can be used along side Shared or VPS web hosting, simply request our support to configure your specific domain or reseller account to use your SmarterMail VPS.

See the SmarterMail documents for more details on managing your VPS.

Setup appropriate MX and A records
When your domain is added to the SmarterMail server and DNS for your domain is not provided by Hostek, the following steps will configure the domain's DNS to allow browsing directly to the webmail portal using mail.yourdomain.com and allow mail to be delivered to the server for the domain.

#Create an "A" record named "mail" (or the prefix you prefer) pointing to the IP address of your SmarterMail server.
#Create an "MX" record pointing to "mail.yourdomain.com" (if you used a different prefix than use "yourprefix.yourdomain.com").
#Login to your SmarterMail VPS and verify the hostname is the same as the domain name you selected. Found under Settings >> General Settings >> Hostname.
#If, when you have pointed the hostname to the server IP address and waited for the DNS propagation to complete (usually 4hrs), the SmarterMail admin page does not load, please contact support.

Adding Domains
#Login to with the SmarterMail Admin user.
#Select the option to to "Add Domain"
#*Adding a domain may be different depending on the version of SmarterMail, so check the documentation for your specific version.
#When completing the new domain configuration you will be required to provide an "Domain Administrator" we recommend providing a generic user for management or assigning this level of permission to the person responsible for managing the domain.

Adding Users
There are two ways to add users depending on the login.

SmarterMail Primary Admin
#Select the domain, and click "Manage"
#*Alternate: Login with the DOMAIN Admin (configured when setting up the domain for the first time)
#Navigate to Settings >> Domain Settings >> Users
#*Add the user with app appropriate settings.

To setup SmarterMail for SSL or TLS
This wiki covers setting up TLS or SSL for SmarterMail for v10, for more version specific help refer to the SmarterMail documentation. This applies to SmarterMail VPS and Windows VPS with SmarterMail Add-on.

#Complete the order for the SSL certificate. We recommend mail.domain.com.
#For Windows VPS with SmarterMail, log into the server via Remote Desktop.
#*The SSL Certificate should have already been setup within IIS, for accessing https://mail.domain.com securely. Export the certificate in a non-browsable directory (example: c:\certs).
#*Skip the next step.
#For SmarterMail VPS ONLY, request the path to your PKEY file from support after the certificate has been installed.
#Log into SmarterMail as the Server Administrator <b>'i.e. admin'.</b>
#Within the SmarterMail Admin panel, select Settings > Ports.
#Set the Protocol, Encryption, Name, Port, Certificate Path (enter the path to your PKEY file) and Description. NOTE: Any custom ports not using the default or alternate ports pre-allowed through our firewalls may require additional support to configure.
#Test, use an SSL/TLS capable email client to test these new configurations.

Maintenance
How to Increase Email Disk Space for a Domain
There will come a time when your domain may reach its limit for email space and you may need to increase it to allow new email messages to be sent and received for that domain.

# Login to your SmarterMail with your admin login.
# In the left hand menu select Domains (The Globe).
# Select the domain by clicking the checkbox for that domain.
# Click on Actions at the top then select Edit.
# Click the Limits tab in the pop-up window that opens up.
# Adjust the Disk Space field to the appropriate size you need.<br />NOTE: This value is in MB. You may set it to 0 to be unlimited and just be limited to your servers a lotted space.
# Click Save to allow the changes to take full effect.

The following explains how to add or remove subscribers from a mailing list. When adding new subscribers, you have the option to add each email address individually or upload a text file of the subscribers' email addresses.<br />
To manage your mailing list, please follow these steps:
#Open a browser window and go to one of the following URLs:<br /> http://mail.yourdomainname.com
#Login as mailadmin@yourdomainname.com with your primary FTP password (unless you changed it).
#From the Domain Settings menu select Mailing Lists.
#Click Save.

How to Subscribe or unsubscribe from a list
The following explains the steps involved in subscribing and unsubscribing to an existing mailing list. This is done by sending an email message to the list. You are also able to execute other List Serv Commands through email messages.<br />
To subscribe to a mailing list, please follow these steps:
#Open your Email client and create a new message.
#Enter (by default)stServ@yourdomainname.com as the To address.
#Enter "subscribe listname" in the body of your message where listname is the name of the list you are subscribing to.
#Leave the subject of the message blank. If your mail program requires text in the subject field, enter random characters.
#Send the email; you will receive a confirmation if you successfully subscribed.
To unsubscribe to a mailing list, please follow these steps:
#Open your Email client and create a new message.
#Enter (by default)stServ@yourdomainname.com as the To address.
#Leave the subject of the message blank. If your mail program requires text in the subject field, enter random characters.
#Send the email; you will receive a confirmation if you successfully unsubscribed.
List Serv Commands
List Serv Commands allow you to control the list through commands sent in email messages to the List Serv Command Address.<br />
By default, the command address for a domain is "stserv@yourdomain.com", where 'yourdomain' is the name of your domain.<br />
To send a command, compose an email to the command address with the command in the body of the message.<br />
The subject of the message is ignored.<br />
Note: Any references to listname should be replaced with the list you are trying to use.
*Help - Replies to the email with basic instructions on using List Serv Commands.
*Help listname - Replies to the email with the contents of the Help File for that list.
*List - Replies to the email with a list of all available lists.
How to Add/remove subscribers from a mailing list
The following explains how to add or remove subscribers from a mailing list. When adding new subscribers, you have the option to add each email address individually or upload a text file of the subscribers' email addresses.
#Choose the mailing list you wish to manage.
#Click Actions, then click List Subscribers.
#Choose from the following options:
##Add Addresses: adds one or many email addresses to the list (when adding multiple addresses, enter only one address per line - duplicates will not be added)
##Download: initiates the download of a .txt file containing your mailing list subscribers
##Upload: initiates the upload a new .txt file containing your list subscribers (one per line). Choose to add the uploaded addresses to the existing list or to completely replace the old list with the new addresses. Duplicates will not be added.
##Delete All: initiates the deletion of all email accounts in the list. A confirmation dialog will appear. Once you delete subscribers, you cannot recover them, so it is recommended that you first download the list before deleting.
##Delete link: this option will delete only the selected email address from the list
#Click Save.
