Mime Type Info

MIME stands for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. Mime types were originally designed to help email clients (using SMTP) define file formats that were being delivered to them, other protocols like HTTP took advantage of Mime Types when telling the destination computer what kind of file is being sent to them. Operating Systems automatically add these Mime Types, but many sites are using exotic extension files (like .flv for flash video) that are not always automatically added to the file types used and have to be defined.

Adding MIME Types in Windows WCP

1. Log into your WCP account
2. Go to Website Settings section. Find and click on IIS Settings under the Website Settings
3. In the dialog box window that pops up, locate and select the Mime Types tab
4. At the bottom of the new tabbed section, locate and click on "Add Mime Type

NOTE: For your Specific Mime Type, you will need to know the Extension name (i.e. .flv) and the Mime Type (i.e. video/x-flv).

Adding MIME Types in Linux cPanel

1. Log into your cPanel account
2. Locate the Advanced section. Find and click on MIME Types
3. Once in the MIME Types section you will add the specific Mime Type.

NOTE: For your Specific Mime Type, you will need to know the Extension name (i.e. .flv) and the Mime Type (i.e. video/x-flv).
